Sound of a wooden chair being dragged… haunting granny.
Cindy just moved into an apartment not knowing there’s a granny age around 60 with super good hearing lives below her new unit…
The story began when Cindy just moved to the new place provided by her company. They use it as an office and she lives there. In short, Cindy received 4 complaints only in two weeks coming from a granny living below her.
The first complaint was because they are talking too loudly so it disturbed the granny peaceful day. Cindy apologize to those security staff for the first time knowing that her supervisor did have a good time with his friends that day and told those staff that she will tell them to keep their voices low.
The second and the third time was their cleaning girl who’s received the complaint through another security man who said they made too many noises. Especially the noises of a wooden chair being dragged. Cindy and the cleaning girl were looking at each other and asking each other to make sure, whether they did really make those noises unconsciously…? They have no clue yet but she was sure there’s one false accused since she’s already in her room when they said there were noises (Cindy was the only one who lived there).
The fourth time, one of the security officers come directly to her unit and knock on the door in the evening. Thinking it might be the supervisor coming back for something so Cindy rushed to the door and opened it to hear the officers telling her to calm down and no need to run because it’s an apartment, even a slight step will make sound and be heard by those who live below them while he tapping his feet and making the sound with a smirk in his face showing Cindy an example then continue with his another lecture saying ‘only those living in houses can make those noises, not for those who reside in an apartment especially there’s a grandma who lives below this unit’.
Being a new resident there, and knowing she should have not rushed to the door earlier, she couldn’t argue but feel humiliated by the way he talks which is intimidating and offensive. He asked for her pics at the end saying that he have to take her picture because he need to report it to his supervisor that he had carried out his duties which is remind this new tenant to not cause noises. Although she hated it, she agreed. And he leaves after taking her pics. She didn’t say much on that occasion because she was super angry. She doesn’t ask for his name either. She knows that she can’t handle things right when her head was in a fire so she chooses to keep her mouth shut.
The next day, she go downstairs and ask the other security staff: ‘who was the guy that talks so arrogantly to me last night and what is his name?’ She was about to report his name to their supervisor telling them that his behavior is not acceptable. She explains the issues to the staff and told him boldly that: ‘indeed I’m new here but that doesn’t mean he can be rude towards a new resident. Some accused that he aimed at me was totally falsely accused! I know my place and I’m literally wasn’t someone who’s making lots of noises! There’s no need for him to use those gestures to mock me’ while copying his gestures and show it to the staff she talked to.
The staff knows about the person that she’s asking about and told her to wait because he needs to make sure first before he can inform her so Cindy went back to her place and waited for the information.
Later, when she got the name of that guy through their cleaning girl, and how the other staff tells the cleaning girl indeed that guy had an arrogant attitude and was not liked by some of the other staff, she actually was already tired from the emotions so, out of energy and being too lazy to report him, she decided to give him another chance. Let’s see if he’s daring to accuse her of something that she didn’t do again and see if he change his way to approach these issues.
“I was just here for two weeks! I just want to live a peaceful life. My… Gosh…!”
Thinking to herself that it’s not her nature to cause scenes.
Fortunately, the complaints stopped… for a week. What happened next was hilarious and unbelievable. That’s what Cindy thought.
The grandma comes directly with another department staff as witnesses to her unit and knocks on the door because none of the security guy wants to go there again knowing those accused towards her might be falsely accused.…!!!
Seeing the granny was old, living alone, a senior, she was trying to be polite and understanding but then the granny keep accusing her of making noises, the noises of a wooden chair being dragged (accidentally, they did have some wooden chair in their place), Cindy tried telling the granny that these noises literally coming from everywhere (yes, she noticed those sounds of a wooden chair being dragged at day, night, midnight, before sunrise, from the unit next to her, from upstairs, literally from everywhere after the granny complaints!), she told her those sounds do not necessarily come from her place, for example, there was one time the granny accused it coming from her place which she knows it wasn’t. Still, the granny confidently said the noises came directly from the granny roof which means, the noises coming from her unit! And then the granny told Cindy to report the other resident which causes the noises that she heard and Cindy thought to herself…
‘why would I report anyone? It’s just a normal sound, I don’t even sure where those sounds come from, I‘m not going to act like this grandma who accuses someone without any proof but only based on her good hearing which she claimed I can’t fool her since she knows the sounds clearly based on years experience according to her ages!.’
Cindy had heard those kinds of noises every day too at her old place, and it was even louder. She never bothered with it.
This grandma was basically worse than that security guy from the other day. She even tried to threaten Cindy by raising her voice (the granny wasn’t being friendly since the very start by the way) saying ‘don’t you know who I am here? Do you want me to tweak your ears so you can know who I am?’
The granny didn’t hear any noises from the kitchen area when questioned by Cindy which she believe was even more noises coming from there daily. She just complaints about that one particular sound “a sound of a wooden chair being dragged".
The granny continues her raging by asking Cindy in her high voice’s ‘has your hand defected?’ ‘can’t you just lift the chair instead of dragging them?!’ ‘has your hand defected?’ She… repeated it another time, a total of three times…! ‘has your hand defected?’ to make sure that Cindy get the meaning of ‘being defected’.
Cindy, standing there, astonished… totally speechless while the cleaning girl behind her was holding her anger listening to what the granny said. When the granny asks for the phone number of the cleaning girl, Cindy refused by telling her that she can come directly to her if she has any complaints since she’s the one who lives there.
She was speechless with the way that granny talk and how she underestimated someone just because they are younger by directly saying out loud to her ‘you don’t live long enough as me so you know nothing’ to emphasize that there’s no doubt and she was right it’s a sound of a wooden chair being dragged coming from Cindy place.
Between pity and speechless…. Cindy thought ‘no wonder her kids and daughter-in-law doesn’t live with her’.
Knowing there’s no point to argue further with the granny which she tried by explaining it rationally earlier, instead, she turn to the man that come with the granny and explained to him that what the granny accused of her was not all true and she will place some buffer below each of the wooden chair legs as per granny requests so it won’t cause any noises when they drag them although Cindy was sure those noises wasn’t coming from her place because they didn’t drag their chair.
With that, their issues were solved. Cindy finally can have her peaceful day... temporarily…
Cindy only live there for about a month and then going back to her hometown because of some circumstances. When Cindy still stayed at her hometown months later, one of the security staff suddenly texted Cindy asking if she dragged the wooden chair because the granny complained these noises were coming from her unit EVERY SINGLE DAY that granny had to report it to the building manager since reporting it to the security didn’t help…!!
Cindy has to explain to the security staff there’s no one living there at the moment. She even joked to the security staff by asking them to place a CCTV in front of her unit in case if there were someone trying to sneak into her unit.
There…, the noises of a wooden chair being dragged keep haunting the granny and never stops until today…
“Maybe these sounds coming from the old office. They followed you here to accompany you.” Said the cleaning girl to Cindy.
Cindy and the girl, looking at each other… both laughed.
